To Utilize the full potential ultrasound system you need the right equipment or accessories, therefore the correct transducer type is used to for proper examination.

  • An ultrasound transducer also called probe is a device that produce sound waves that bounce of body tissues and make echoes.

  • The Transducer also receives the echoes and sends them to a computer that uses them to create an image called sonogram

  • Ultrasound Transducer or probes is a very important part of the ultrasound machine and a core part of a signal transmission chain for image reconstruction.

  • The essential element of each ultrasound transducer is a piezoelectric crystal. it serves to generate as well as receive ultrasound waves.

  • You can find ultrasound transducer in very different shapes, sizes, and with diverse feature. this is because you need different specification for maintaining image quality across different part of the bodies.

  • Transducer can either be passed over the surface of the body external transducer or can be inserted into an-orifice such as rectum, vagina these are internal transducer.

The Ultrasound Transducer differ in construction based on:

  • Ultrasound linear probe is form when piezoelectric crystal arrangement is linear, the shape of the beam is rectangular and the near field resolution is good.

  • The footprint frequency and application of the linear transducer depends on weather the product is 2D or 3D imaging.

Ultrasound linear 2D probe has a wide footprint and its central frequency is 2.5Mhz - 12Mhz.
You can use the transducer for various application such as:
  • Vascular examination
  • Venipuncture, Blood vessels visualization 
  • Breast
  • Toroid
  • Tendon, Arthrogenouis image of linear probe
  • Rectangular beam shape
  • Interpretative laparoscopy

 Linear Transducer/Probe for 3d Imaging 

Ultrasound linear 3D probe has a wide footprint and central frequency of 7.5Mhz - 11Mhz

You can use this transducer for various application such as:
  • Breast 
  • Thyroid
  • Arteria Carotis of vascular application.

2. Convex Transducer

  • The convex transducer type is also called the curve transducer because the piezoelectric crystal arrangement is curvilinear.

  • The beam is convex and the transducer is good for in depth examination even though the image resorption decrease when depth increase.

The convex transducer for 2D Imaging has a wide footprint and its central frequency is 2.5Mhz - 7.5Mhz

Convex Transducer For 3D Imaging

The convex transducer for D Imaging has a wide footprint and its central frequency is 3.5Mhz - 6.5Mhz you can use it for abdominal examination.

3. Phased Array Transducer

This Transducer is named after the piezoelectric crystal arragment which is called phased array and it is most commonly use phased array transducer has small footprint & low frequency 

Application

  1. Cardiac Examination 
  2. Abdominal Examination
  3. Brain Examination

4. Pencil Transducer

Also called CW Doppler probes are utilised to measure blood flow and speed of sound in blood. This probe has small footprint and uses low frequency ( Typically 2Mhz - 8Mhz )

5. Endocavity Transducer

These probes provides you with the opportunity to perform internal examination of the patent therefore they are designed to fit in specific body orifice. the endocavity transducer includes endovaginal, endorectal, endocavity transducer typically they have small footprint and the frequency varies in the range of 3.5Mhz - 11.5Mhz.

6. Transesophageal ( TEC ) Transducer

7. 4D Transducer

3D imaging allow fetal structure and internal anatomy to be visualized as static 3D images. However 4D ultrasound allow us to live streaming videos of the image showing the motion of the fetal heart wall or valves or blood flow in various vessels. It is 3D ultrasound in live motion
