Stochastic Effect Of Radiation

  • Stochastic effects occur at level of cells.

  • It has no thresholds level of radiation  dose.

  • The probability of effects is proportional to the dose.

  • A latent period is seen between the time of exposure and the event of manifest.

  • Severity independent of dose received (both somatic and genetic )

  • Stochastic effect of radiation is seen hen the cells are modified rather then killed.

  • Ex: Leukemia, Malignant tumor, Genetic mutation.

Non Stochastic Effect Of Radiation 

  • Non Stochastic effect occur at tissue level.

  • It has definite threshold level of radiation.

  • The probability of the effect is not proportional to the dose 

  • The latent period is not seen between the time of exposure and the time of manifest.

  • Severity may be proportional to the dose received (Only in somatic )

  • Seen when the cells are killed or loose capability to divide.

  • Ex: Cataract, Fertility impairment, skin burn.
